01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

Nestled in the heart of Kailua, Kalapawai Cafe & Deli offers a delightful fusion of café charm, bakery warmth, deli freshness, and restaurant sophistication. This beloved local gem is truly a celebration of fresh, island-inspired cuisine crafted with care and passion, making every meal here a heartfelt experience.

The menu showcases a thoughtfully curated selection that perfectly balances comforting flavors and culinary flair. Their entrees, available from 4:30 PM until close, stand out with exceptional dishes like the Auction Fresh Fish with Fattoush Salad, where perfectly grilled, medium-rare ahi is paired with a zesty, herbaceous salad, creating a harmonious dance of textures and flavors for just $29. For a more indulgent plate, the Caldeirada is an unbeatable choice—a sumptuous, saffron-infused tomato broth brimming with fresh catch, shrimp, scallops, and Portuguese sausage, served alongside a toasted baguette to soak up every drop of its spicy goodness ($32). Food lovers will also appreciate the Lemongrass Risotto with Auction Fresh Fish, where the ahi’s delicate seasoning intertwines beautifully with the fragrant risotto and steamed bok choy.

Beyond the savory, Kalapawai’s bakery delights deserve their own applause. Pastries burst with freshness and just the right balance of sweetness, making them an irresistible treat whether as a hearty breakfast starter or a midday indulgence. Customer reviews highlight the breakfast burrito—a hearty, meat-packed delight—as well as fresh, tasty sandwiches that expertly showcase the quality of their ingredients.

Dining here is as much about the ambiance as it is about the food. The charming outdoor patio is thoughtfully tucked away behind lush greenery, providing a serene and intimate setting away from the bustle of Kailua Road. This cozy yet vibrant atmosphere is amplified by attentive staff who bring genuine warmth and a sense of connection, ensuring guests feel right at home. Whether you’re craving a casual brunch after a visit to the nearby Farmers Market or a relaxed dinner, Kalapawai balances efficiency and heartfelt hospitality.

It’s no surprise that patrons like Justin Cunningham appreciate Kalapawai’s rare ability to blend efficient service with a soulful welcome, creating a truly small-town feel. From those seeking gluten-free options to those eager to savor the freshest local ingredients, this café-deli-restaurant hybrid consistently wins over visitors and locals alike.

Adding a unique layer to the experience, Kalapawai also offers a stylish retail collection featuring logo wear from Anetik, including quarter zips, long sleeves, and hoodies for both men and women—perfect for taking a piece of this Kailua spirit home with you.

If you find yourself in Kailua, carving out time to visit Kalapawai Cafe & Deli is a must. The combination of vibrant flavors, friendly service, and inviting atmosphere creates a memorable dining experience that not only satisfies your appetite but also your desire for genuine aloha.

We stopped to get breakfast/brunch on our way to Hanauma Bay! It was quick, easy and tasted good! The breakfast burrito was very filling, good amount of meat, salsa on the side was mid. The Italian sandwich was fresh and tasty. Maybe could use a little more meat. Pastries was delicious! Their patio is very cute, a little separated off from the streets by greenery which is nice!

It's hard to mesh efficient service in a restaurant and provide a wholesome connection and warmth to the customer. Kalapawai Cafe & Deli absolutely exceeds expectations in both avenues and projects the atmosphere of a small-town gem. The food is fresh, delicious, and reasonably priced. The staff are kind and capable. At the risk of making the line longer for myself, if you're in Kailua, you need to stop here for breakfast or lunch.

A great place for brunch/lunch after visiting the nearby Farmers Market. The service was friendly and efficient. The sandwiches were good with fresh ingredients. There were both indoor and outdoor seating areas that were tight, but comfortable.

Dropped by Kalapalai Cafe for a quick breakfast, and it was one of those meals that keeps you thinking. The breakfast burritos were a bit of a culinary puzzle - somewhat bland on their own, but transformed by the accompanying salsa. It's like the salsa was the secret ingredient that turned a plain Jane into a flavor queen. The cappuccino was the real star of the show. Rich, smooth, and reminiscent of a quaint Italian cafe, it proved that great coffee doesn't always need a fancy mug to shine. Served in a simple to-go cup, it was a reminder that sometimes simplicity wins. At around $10 for two burritos, it's a reasonable deal for the area. Not a gourmet experience, but an authentic taste of local dining. The kind of spot that has character, even if that character needs a little seasoning. Would I come back? Yes. Because sometimes an imperfect meal tells a better story than a perfect one. Just remember to ask for extra salsa - it's the hero this breakfast needs.

We had such a nice time here. We were lucky , got to sit right away on Thursday around 1030am. The cashier/waitress made a mistake and only got 1 sandwich instead of 3. So my family had to wait longer for their meal. Everything tasted good, and I loved the atmosphere in and out. Coffee is good too! I wish they keep up with the coffee machine because they ran out while I was there. I would love to come again.
